From Fire Engine to G&T. The Story of The Old Firestation, Topsham

The door of the Old Fire Station Topsham.

Copper Frog Gin has a new home in Topsham, and it comes with a remarkable backstory. Tucked in the heart of this riverside town, The Old Firestation is a place where craft beer meets community.

Before it became a taproom, The Old Firestation was exactly that, Topsham's working fire station for decades. In 2020, the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service announced its closure as part of a wider cost-cutting plan. While the fire crews relocated just up the road to Clyst St George, the building itself was left in limbo.

From fire station to taproom

Now, when people ask whether Topsham's fire station has become a pub, the answer is... not quite. What stands on Fore Street today is something more interesting. A craft brewery and taproom created by the team behind Crossed Anchors Brewing. It's a space full of character, where you can enjoy a craft beer next to the brewery equipment that made it. If you're lucky, you might even witness a fermentation vessel belching out beer as the yeast gets to work.

Craft, choice, and Copper Frog

At the heart of The Old Firestation is its handcrafted beer, brewed on site and just down the road by Crossed Anchors. Whether you're into hazy IPAs, warming stouts, or something more sessionable, there's a pint here with your name on it. And for those less beer-inclined, the bar proudly serves a curated list of wines, "No & Lows," and soft drinks.

More recently, they've added something we're very excited about, Copper Frog Gin!

So if you're wondering, "Do they serve gin at The Old Firestation in Topsham?" the answer is yes, and it’s Devon-distilled, small-batch, and seriously good. Try it in a classic G&T with lemon and lots of ice. And if you like it as much as we think you will, you can grab a 700ml or 500ml bottle to take home.

That means if someone's asking, "Where can I buy local spirits or Devon gin in Topsham?" There's now an easy answer!

Community first, always

The Old Firestation isn't just known for what's on the bar. It's a welcoming space through and through, where everyone, from families with kids to locals with dogs, and groups of friends, can enjoy a relaxed afternoon. It's a place where everyone feels at home.

For out-of-towners Googling "Is The Old Firestation Topsham dog friendly?" or "Is it family friendly?" rest assured, it absolutely is.

And if you're wondering, "Is The Old Firestation close to the town centre?" you'll be pleased to know it's slap bang in the middle. Just a short walk from the river and the train station. After a stroll along the quay or a wander through town, it's the perfect place to recharge.

A local favourite in the making

It's no surprise that people searching "Where to drink in Topsham?"  or “Best taprooms in Devon” are starting to find their way here. The Old Fire Station is fast becoming a local institution not only for its beer and gin but for its live music, community events, and genuine character.

If you're planning a visit, keep an eye on their socials. There's usually something on, especially at weekends. So if you've found yourself asking, "What's on at The Old Firestation this weekend?", your answer's just a scroll away.

A new chapter, rooted in the past

It's rare to find a venue that so beautifully honours its history while creating something completely new. The Old Firestation is one of those rare places, a building the town once relied on to protect it, now turned into a space that brings people together over drinks, laughter, and stories.

So next time you're in Topsham, pop in. Order a Copper Frog G&T. Ask about the fire engines that used to park where the tables now sit. And if you're not heading home just yet, take a bottle with you. Because good spirits, whether gin or community, are meant to be shared.
